A special service was held in Athelstaneford Kirk on Sunday 30 November to mark Scotland’s national day – St Andrew’s Day. The life and work of our patron saint, St Andrew, was the theme of Minister Joanne Evans-Boiten’s sermon.
After the service, in the Churchyard in glorious sunshine, the national flag was blessed by the Minister and taken to the Saltire Memorial where it was hoisted on the tall flagpole, while the assembled crowd sang the Saltire Anthem (composed by Phil Cunningham). Led by the Haddington Pipe Band, children from the village holding a giant Saltire then marched along Main Street, before the Lord Lieutenant passed the flag to a horse rider whose task was to deliver it safely to St Michael’s Church in Inveresk for an afternoon ceremony.
